For its summer concert, KCS brings together vividly contrasted works written for chorus and piano duet. Brahms’ gloriously melodious Liebeslieder waltzes, inspired by the music of Schubert, are full of freshness and charm. Rather less well-known is Richard Rodney Bennett’s Nonsense, a delicious and often hilarious setting of nonsense verse by Mervyn Peake, which includes such gems as ‘Of Pygmies, Palms and Pirates’, ‘Lean Sideways on the Wind’, and the grim parable ‘The Dwarf of Battersea’.
Kingston Choral Society celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2010 with a performance of Handel’s Messiah, the work with which the Society was launched. It has developed its reputation for performing concerts of high standard, with recent performances including Bach’s St John Passion and Haydn’s Creation at Cadogan Hall, Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Poulenc’s Gloria, Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610, Howells’ Hymnus Paradisi and the world première of Graham Ross’ And since to look at things in bloom. The choir numbers about 125 singers. It gives several concerts each year, at least two with professional orchestras and soloists of the highest calibre.
