Closing Festival Concert

Kingston Choral Society

Kingston Choral Society (KCS) performs Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610. This is a work full of contrast and colour by a composer at the height of his powers. KCS is joined by six soloists and the outstanding musicians of the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble and Purcell Orchestra.

Soloists: Julia Doyle – Soprano, Alice Gribbin – Soprano, Matthew Long – Tenor, Nick Pritchard – Tenor, William Gaunt – Bass and Frederick Long – Bass.

Lenten Evensong

ALLEGRI MISERERE. One of the most celebrated pieces of choral music, which a young Mozart wrote down from memory, Allegri’s Miserere mei, Deus calls for treble soloists who are able to sustain 5 top Cs, sung tonight by the Tiffin Boys’ Choir. This great work forms the anthem in an evensong for the season of Lent, also featuring Purcell Hear my prayer and the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis sung in Byrd’s fauxbourdon setting.

Refreshments are available after the service.

Evensong at All Saints’ Church

Attend a service in the newly-renovated Nave of All Saints’ Church, undergoing an extensive restoration project under the aegis of architect Ptolemy Dean. The choral music at evensong is sung by the celebrated All Saints’ Choir conducted by Simon Toyne, accompanied by organist Stephen Westrop, and features wellloved music by Noble (Magnificatand Nunc Dimittis in B minor) and Wesley (Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace).

Using recorded examples, she will explore its role from the early blues of Bessie Smith, through the close harmonies of the Mills Brothers, Hi-Lo’s and improvised scatting, to interpretations of popular songs by the likes of Billie Holiday and Mel Tormé, and on into more contemporary examples of the art.

Amidst their struggles to communicate, they quickly realise the gravity of their plight is greater than they had envisaged. David has run drama workshops across the borough for over 15 years and is the Artistic Director of Kingston Junior Drama Company. We’re eagerly looking forward to singing again in front of an audience! Our next concert is at Kingston Parish Church on 4th December at 6pm (note earlier than usual start time). We will be performing Handel’s “Messiah” with soloists and orchestra conducted by Joel Newsome-Hubbard. Masks must be worn by the audience whilst in the church.
